Reading the 389-page manuscript in front of her, Professor Jen Bucholtz was persuaded it held the key to a string of grisly murders, still unsolved after more than 60 years.

A few days previously, Jen had been approached by a stranger with a remarkable proposition: He was convinced he knew the identity of the mysterious “Zodiac,” a serial killer who claimed in newspapers to have killed as many as 12 victims in California during the 1960s.

But the police stated the Zodiac only shot or stabbed “a few” victims between
December 1968 and October 1969. Many experts, however, believe the serial
killer’s death count is closer to a dozen, with similar crime-scene “MOs” and signatures that extend from San Diego to the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.
